The Bible is incomparable. It was written over the course of 1,500 years by a wide variety of people.
It is a global bestseller and has influenced very many men and women like no other document.
Even 1,900 years after the last entry, the Bible still has the same power of God within it to change people.
The authority of the Word
In a debate with the Jews, Jesus described the Bible as a Scripture that cannot be broken.
He quoted Psalm 82 and said that the prophet Asaph had written down God’s Words.
When the Devil tempted him in the desert, Jesus recited from the Old Testament.
In this way he overcame the Devil, because the Devil was not able to withstand the power of the Scripture.
Jesus often used the Old Testament as a source of his teachings.
The apostles also recognized this authority. They often referred to it in their letters.
God the Father, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the apostles confirm it – even the Devil has to accept it: the Bible is the Word of God.
Our spirit is renewed
If someone is preaching the Gospel, the Holy Spirit brings the seed of the Word into the heart of the people.
As soon as it takes root, the person is born again from inside. Or, as James expresses it: “He chose to give us birth through the word of truth.”
Our spirit is immediately renewed. It is now righteous and holy, like the spirit of Jesus.
It was sealed with the Holy Spirit and can no longer be infected by sin. We are new creatures.
The effect on our soul
The effect on our soul is different. In Psalm 119:130 it says, “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
The Word brings spiritual knowledge and understanding to the soul, it renews the thoughts.
The transformation can be compared with the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly.
The degree of transformation is under our control and depends on the priority that we give to the Word of God.
If we do not read the Bible, our soul and our lifestyle remains the same. But if we do read it, then suddenly we know the truth, absolutely clear and certain.
We’ve only scratched the surface. You can find out more about the topic in depth with the brochure “The Word of God” or with the book “Sharper than a Two-Edged Sword”, where reading the Bible by looking up the many Bible verses mentioned is an integral part.
